Day 3

I got in today around 2:45-3 today. After 2 rounds of rope, 1 of stretching, and 1 of shadow boxing, Art (Mr. Romalho) called me over to ask me if I wanted to tire myself out today...little did I know what I was getting myself into. 10 minutes later me and ten other boys ranging in age from what I imagine 18 ran to Lowell's south common- which 1.2 miles from the gym...we then ran 8 laps, did 10 minutes of hill sprints, then 6 full field sprints. I'm exhausted.

Day 2

Today was day 2. I went in earleir (around 2:45) and started with a few rounds of jump rope, shadow boxing, then hopped in the ring with Billy, an older gent that really helped me put some combo's together. The guys at the gym are really low-key, a very interesting dynamic. Its more generational, yet for a newcomer anyone can add a couple comments. But you have to leave it to the trainers to tell you good job. They recognize my progress because of other athletic skills. Art gave me my set of wraps, to protect my knuckles. With Billy I got to put on real boxing gloves. As much skill as it takes, I really want to get stronger, to get just ripped. It's nice that I don't really care about losing weight or gaining it, as long as its healthy. West End does it right, as far as I can see. I broke a good sweat and still had plenty of time for more. I saw a couple kids sparring- one suffering a bruised ego and a bloody nose. It was his fault, he wouldn't throw the jab, and his cross took him off balance making him drop his hands. Hopefully I get back in there on Friday.

Day 1

I'm going back in time to thank the guidance counselors in high school to assign me as a classmate to Nicole. Today(May 22, 12) she brought me to the West End Gym, the boxing gym where the movie "The Fighter" was filmed. We walked in and I was already attached. I met Mr. Ramalho, the owner and JJ- a friendly guy who gave me some tips right off the start. Nicole left and soon JJ had my back and Tristan, another southpaw to help me out with technique. Remember: chin down, pivot, and make sure your hands come back up to block your face.

I've already noticed a lot of comparisons to lax. Each step is an immediate follow-up step. Breathing is important, pivot in the core and on the toe. Always stay balanced yet light on your toes.

A mile away is a gas station where I promptly picked up gatorade. Mercy me.
